Wimbledon Court 1 (officially called No.1 Court at Wimbledon) is the second-largest stadium at the Wimbledon Championships. Known for its simultaneous intimate and grand atmosphere, it hosts matches with some of the world’s biggest tennis stars. With The Championships scheduled for June and July, in the peak of London’s summer, fans able to choose their seats may opt for sun protection for added comfort. This guide will help identify the best shaded areas at Wimbledon Court 1.

Where are the seats in the shade at Wimbledon Court 1?

The seats in the shade at Wimbledon Court 1 are typically found in:

  • Baseline, South Side: Shaded early in the afternoon
  • Sideline, West Side: Begins to receive shade by late-afternoon
  • Under Cover: Rows farthest from the court are covered and shaded

The Grounds at the All England Club open daily at 10:00 AM during The Championships, but matches at Court 1 don’t begin until 1:00 PM. Mid-summer sunset in London isn’t until after 9:00 PM. That’s nearly eight hours of tennis action that takes place while the sun is shining brightly.

In 1997, Court 1 replaced an older venue on the same site, and in 2019, a retractable roof was added as well. The roof’s primary function is to allow play to continue during rain, serving more as an umbrella used only when rain is in the forecast. If clear weather is expected, tennis fans should anticipate the roof being open with the sun shining through.

Wimbledon Court 1 Orientation to the Sun

Court 1 is oriented northwest to southeast. When matches begin at 1:00 PM, the sun is high above the southwest corner of the court. Throughout the afternoon, it gradually dips behind the west side of the stadium before eventually setting late in the evening. This orientation makes the south side of the stadium the “shade side” early in the day and the west side the “shade side” later in the afternoon. Sections on the north and east sides of the stadium are the “sunny sides,” though rows farthest from the court may still be shaded if they are under cover.

Seats and Sections in the Sun and Shade at Wimbledon Championship Matches

Court 1 features a unique design with most seating areas arranged in a circular shape around the court, plus a few small sections immediately adjacent to the court on both sidelines. A retractable roof, supported by a large circular frame, covers the seats farthest from the court. Seats in the back benefit from cover and shade provided by the roof frame. Since Court 1 is a smaller venue than Centre Court, even seats up here don’t feel too far from the action.

Court 1 unfortunately uses a section numbering scheme that is not particularly intuitive. Section numbers run sequentially in a counter-clockwise direction around the court rather than based on the distance away from the court, like how it’s done at Centre Court. The easiest way to think about seating at Court 1 is to picture two rings: an inner ring and an outer ring. Debenture seats are located in the inner ring. These seats offer some of the best views and are close enough to the court that they are not under the direct cover of the roof frame.

For those arriving in time for the first match of the day at 1:00 PM, the sun will be near its highest point in the sky when the action begins. Seats in the outer ring are safe from the sun as they are under direct cover. Closer to the court, seats in southwest debenture sections 20, 22, 24, and 29 are the best bet for early shade.

Early in the afternoon, sideline sections and north baseline sections will be in the path of the sun. If you’re hoping to sit on the sideline, the west side is the better bet for shade. By mid-to-late afternoon, the position of the sun will shift, and tennis fans in sections 23, 28, 30, 32, 33, and 37 will experience shade with the sun at their backs. However, fans on the east sideline will be in the path of the sun.

By the evening hours, most sections at Court 1, including those on the east sideline, are shaded. However, as the sun rotates around the stadium, sections that were shaded earlier in the day start to receive splashes of sun. Specifically, sections 14, 15, 16, and 19 might receive a direct hit of sun in the evening hours before sunset.
