Shaded Seats at WakeMed Soccer Park
WakeMed Soccer Park is an open-air soccer stadium located in Cary, North Carolina. It serves as the home pitch for the North Carolina Courage of the NWSL and North Carolina FC of the USL. In North Carolina, summers can be particularly hot and humid and unfortunately WakeMed is one of the least shaded venues in professional soccer. Regardless, Courage and North Carolina FC supporters can use this guide and the stadium’s seating chart to identify the few shaded seats at WakeMed Soccer Park.
Where are the seats in the shade and sun at WakeMed Soccer Park?
Typically, shaded seats at WakeMed Soccer Park are:
- Luxury seats in sections 105 and 106 (day games)
- On the west sideline (evening games)
And seats in the sun are primary found:
- On the east sideline
- Behind the goal lines
Games at WakeMed Soccer Park typically kick off in the evening, but the schedule also includes mid-day and early afternoon matches. North Carolina is known for its notorious summer heat and humidity, and frankly, WakeMed offers very little shade. In the evening, while finding a shaded seat may be challenging, choosing a seat that faces away from the sun, rather than directly into it, can still significantly enhance your matchday experience.
WakeMed Soccer Park Orientation to the Sun
The stadium’s slightly off-axis north-to-south orientation means the sun is almost directly above the south goal line in the 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM hour. Over the course of the afternoon the sun dips behind the west side of the stadium. It eventually sets near the north goal line.
The graphic below shows the approximate location of the sun throughout the day on July 1st.
Seats in the Sun and Shade at Afternoon WakeMed Soccer Park Matches
WakeMed Soccer Park features four distinct seating areas offering a range of options from bleacher-style seats behind the north goal line to premium seating on the west sideline. The seats are primarily on a single level, but a renovation in 2014 added an upper level on the east sideline. Unlike larger soccer venues, there is no roof or canopy covering the stands or field.
For 1:00 PM games, options for shade are extremely limited. The “Owners Box” seats behind sections 304-307 may offer some respite from the sun, as these seats are under cover. However, these are not widely available, so your best bet is to rely on sunscreen, a hat, and other sun protection. The premium seats in sections 105 and 106 benefit slightly from the suite structure directly behind, making these the only two sections with any hope for shade during an early match.
The sunniest seats are on the east side. Sections 301-310 and 501-505 offer no hope for shade during a daytime game. The goal lines will also be sunny. Be sure to check which goal line hosts the supporters’ section, in case you want to seek out or avoid those seats.
Seats in the Sun and Shade at Evening WakeMed Soccer Park Matches
The situation improves for evening matches. Seats on the west side of the stadium, in sections 101-110, become shaded first. Depending on the time of year, these may already be shaded by kickoff or will become shaded shortly after the game starts. Sections 201-208 behind the south goal line are also suitable for shade, as large trees near the stadium provide relief once the sun lowers.
The sunniest seats for an evening match are on the east sideline in sections 301-310 and 501-505. These sections are not only sun-exposed for the longest duration but also face directly into the setting sun. During the summer months, you might find yourself staring directly into the sun for the first half of the match. If seated here, bring your strongest sunglasses!
