SoFi Stadium is a state-of-the-art facility in Inglewood, California, a suburb of Los Angeles. It serves as the home field for both the Los Angeles Rams and the Los Angeles Chargers during the NFL season and is one of the most advanced stadiums for watching live football. Southern California is famous for its excellent climate, but it can get quite warm, especially during early-season games. The stadium features a translucent canopy which lets the sun’s rays shine through. Fans sensitive to the sun should use this guide to find the shaded seats at SoFi Stadium.

Where Are the Seats in the Shade and Sun at SoFi Stadium?

Generally speaking, shaded seats at SoFi Stadium are located:

  • On the Chargers’ home side of the field
  • Behind the south end zone

Conversely, seats in the sun at SoFi Stadium can be found:

  • On the Rams’ home side of the field
  • Behind the north end zone

SoFi Stadium is unique in being one of only two NFL venues shared by two local teams. In Los Angeles, the Chargers and Rams have locker rooms on opposite sides of the stadium, meaning there is no universal “home” and “away” side as you might find in other venues. Specifically, the Chargers are on the west sideline, and the Rams are on the east sideline.

Most games at SoFi Stadium start around 1:00 PM. However, prime-time “night” games usually kick off in the 5:00 PM hour to accommodate the TV schedule for viewers on the East Coast. Read on for specific details about shaded seats and sections.

SoFi Stadium’s Orientation to the Sun

SoFi Stadium is oriented from northwest to southeast. By noon, the sun is high in the sky near the southern end zone. Over the course of the afternoon, it shifts and eventually sets behind the Chargers’ home side, near the northern end zone.

The graphic below shows the approximate location of the sun throughout the day on October 1st.

Seats in the Sun and Shade at Early Afternoon Chargers and Rams Games

SoFi Stadium is equipped with a translucent canopy that shields against rain but still lets the sun in. Another unique feature is the massive oval-shaped video board suspended over the field. It’s so large that it casts shadows over both the stands and playing field, although it’s not reliable for providing shade throughout an entire game.

For early afternoon games, most seats will be in the sun at kickoff. However, an increasing number of sections will move into the shade as the game progresses. For shade, your best bet lies on the Chargers’ side, in sections C106-C117, 212-227, and 315-331. Be cautious when selecting bleeder seats in the 400 or 500 levels; even on the Chargers’ side, you may not escape the sun’s rays. Unlike other NFL stadiums with opaque canopies covering upper-level sections, SoFi Stadium’s translucent roof permits sunlight to hit all around the upper levels.

Seats on the Rams’ side will largely remain in the sun for the majority of an early afternoon game. Sections C126-C137, 202-238, 303-342, 434-451, and 530-550 will generally be sunny, unless you’re seated in one of the very back rows directly beneath the level above you. Club level seats on the Rams’ side may receive shade, but probably only during the last quarter of the game, if at all.

Seats in the Sun and Shade at Late Afternoon Chargers and Rams Games

While the Chargers and Rams almost never have true “night” games due to the NFL’s national television schedule, fans attending late afternoon games will still be interested in the location of shaded seats. Seats on the Chargers’ side of the field will likely remain in the shade for the entire game.

On the Rams’ side, shade will start to hit the seats closest to the field first and move upward. It will first reach the 100 club level, followed by the 200, 300, and 400 levels. Seats in the 500 level will be last to receive shade, so bring sunglasses if you plan to sit up there.
