Both of the New York City NFL franchises play their home games in… New Jersey. MetLife Stadium is a unique stadium located at the Meadowlands Sports Complex. The first few months of the NFL season are quite toasty in the Tri-state area and fans may seek the relief of a seat in the shade. Later in the season when the weather turns chilly, finding a seat in the sun will likely improve your gameday experience. Use this article in combination with the Metlife Stadium seating chart to find the seats in the shade and sun.

Where are the seats in the shade and sun at Metlife Stadium?

As a general rule, the seats in the shade at MetLife Stadium are located:

  • In the southern end zone
  • On the visiting team’s side of the field
  • In the upper bowl in row toward the back and under the rim

And the seats in the sun at MetLife Stadium are located:

  • On the Jets and Giants side of the field
  • In rows closer to the field and not under cover

Most games at MetLife Stadium kick off at 1:00pm with the occasional night game or late afternoon start. For specific details about which sections to look for tickets in, read on.

Metlife Stadium Orientation to the Sun

MetLife Stadium is oriented in a slightly off-axis north to south direction. By noon the sun is high in the sky and slightly behind the southern end zone. Over the course of the afternoon the sun dips down behind visitor’s side of the stadium and eventually sets just past the 50-yard line.

The graphic below shows the approximate location of the sun throughout the day on October 1st.

Seats in the Sun and Shade at Early Afternoon Jets and Giants Games

Depending on the time of year a seat in the shade or in the sun may be preferable. The sun advances across the afternoon sky behind the visitor’s side of the field. That means that fans in sections 124-140 and 224-240 will experience shade the earliest. In the upper bowl seats in the back half of the section and shaded by the “solar ring” on top of the upper lip. Fans in sections 324-340 will get shade in all rows eventually as the sun dips behind the stadium.

If you’re seeking the rays of the sun, most sections on the home side of the stadium will keep you warm, as long as its not a cloudy day. Sections 108-118 and 208-219 are a good bet. Just don’t sit so far back that you’re under cover that blocks the sun. The upper bowl sections 308-319 might not be great if you’re seeking out sun. The back rows will be covered by the upper lip and the wind chill up there may cancel out any warmth the sun provides anyway.

Seats in the Sun and Shade at Late Afternoon Jets and Giants Games

When the New York teams kick off after 4:00pm it’s a lot easier to find a seat in the shade than in the sun. For late day games, most seats on the visitor’s side of the field, as well the southern end zone sections, will be shaded for most or all the game. If you’re looking for sun, stick to the home side of the field. The sun is low in the sky at this time of day and depending on the exact time of year it may be dark before halftime!
