Shaded Seats at Saputo Stadium
Saputo Stadium (Stade Saputo en français) is an open-air soccer stadium in Montreal, Quebec. It serves as the home pitch for CF Montréal. Montreal’s summers are known for being pleasantly warm, but with plenty of sunny days and late summer sunsets, making the selection of shaded seating an important consideration for fans. CF Montréal supporters attending matches can use this guide in conjunction with the stadium’s seating chart to find the best shaded seats at Saputo Stadium.
Where are the seats in the shade and sun at Saputo Stadium?
Typically, shaded seats at Saputo Stadium are:
- On the west sideline (called President’s Grandstand)
And seats in the sun are primary found:
- On the east sideline
- Behind the goal lines
Games at Saputo Stadium typically kick off in the evening, but the schedule also includes mid-day and early afternoon matches. While Montreal is not generally known for a hot climate, its relatively northern location results in late sunsets during the summer months. Soccer fans should be aware of where to find shade and the direction the sun faces during evening matches to avoid spending part of the game battling the sun in their eyes.
Saputo Stadium Orientation to the Sun
The stadium’s slightly off-axis north-to-south orientation means the sun is almost directly above the south goal line in the 1:00 PM hour. Over the course of the afternoon the sun dips down behind the structure on the west side of the stadium. It eventually sets near the north goal line.
It is extremely important to be aware that the official seating chart for Saputo Stadium is rotated 90 degrees from the actual orientation. What is labeled as the “North Grandstand” is, in reality, on the west side. Similarly, the “West Grandstand” is actually situated on the south side. This can be extremely confusing for those not familiar with the venue. Additionally, many seating charts on third-party ticketing websites also have the compass rose incorrectly oriented. Be cautious and make sure to double-check section numbers for accurate orientation!
The graphic below shows the approximate location of the sun throughout the day on July 1st.
Seats in the Sun and Shade at Afternoon Saputo Stadium Matches
Saputo Stadium boasts a unique design with a reverse C-shaped section on the north, east, and south sides of the pitch, and a separate grandstand (known as the President’s Grandstand) on the west side. It’s crucial to note that the President’s Grandstand is often labeled the “North Grandstand” in seating charts, even though it is actually on the west side.
The C-shaped section of the stadium features a small canopy that covers the back few rows in each section, while the President’s Grandstand has a longer roof covering nearly all rows. Sections 101-111 in the President’s Grandstand are the best choices for shade. Seats in the first few rows closest to the pitch may start off sunny in a 1:00 PM match but will quickly become shaded.
The remaining seats, from section 112-134, will mostly be sunny during the afternoon. The highest 3 or 4 rows in these sections may receive some shade, as they are directly under the roof, but the roof on the C-shaped section is not extensive enough to provide significant shade to most seats.
Seats in the Sun and Shade at Evening Saputo Stadium Matches
For evening matches, sections 101-111 in the President’s Grandstand are consistently shaded. Seats behind the goal lines in sections 112-116 and 130-134 will also become shaded relatively early in the evening. Be aware that seats behind the goals are typically designated as supporters’ sections with General Admission seating, in case you prefer to seek out or avoid these areas.
The sunniest seats for an evening match are in sections 120-126. These sections are not only exposed to the sun for the longest period but also face directly into the setting sun. During the summer, you might find yourself directly facing the sun for some time before dusk.
