Shaded Seats at Rose Bowl Stadium
Rose Bowl Stadium is one of the world’s most iconic sports venues. It is primarily known for college football, serving as the home field for the UCLA Bruins and hosting the namesake Rose Bowl Game each New Year’s Day. The stadium is also a prominent venue for international soccer, having hosted several FIFA World Cup matches, including finals. Additionally, it will be a key venue for the 2028 Summer Olympics. Southern California is famous for its warm and sunny summers, so sports fans should use this guide along with the stadium’s seating chart to find the best shaded seats at Rose Bowl Stadium.
Where are the seats in the shade and sun at Rose Bowl Stadium?
As a general rule, the seats in the shade at Rose Bowl Stadium are located:
- West Sideline: Terry Donahue Pavilion provides afternoon shade
And the seats in the sun at Rose Bowl Stadium are located:
- East Sideline: Sunny from early afternoon to sunset
- Goal Lines: Exposed to the sun for most of the day
Games at Rose Bowl Stadium can kick off at just about any time during the day. College football games are frequently scheduled for the afternoon, and west coast teams typically play early to accommodate the national TV broadcast schedule. Coordinating your seat choice with the start time is critical if you’re looking for shade.
Rose Bowl Stadium Orientation to the Sun
Rose Bowl Stadium is oriented in a slightly off-axis north to south direction. By 1:00 p.m., the sun is high over the south end zone. Over the course of the afternoon, the sun dips down behind the Terry Donahue Pavilion on the west side of the stadium and eventually sets closer to the north goal line.
The graphic below shows the approximate location of the sun throughout the day on July 1st.

Seats in the Sun and Shade at Early Afternoon Rose Bowl Games
Rose Bowl Stadium dates back over a century. It is a historic stadium that uses the classic “bowl” design, hence the name. Unlike modern stadiums, the Rose Bowl features a single level of seats in an unbroken oval around the field. On the west side of the stadium, the Terry Donahue Pavilion houses the press box and luxury suites. Rose Bowl Stadium is otherwise completely open to the elements, with no canopy, roof, or other structures to block the sun.
That’s all to say that shade is hard to come by early in the afternoon. For a game that kicks off at noon or 1:00 p.m., the sun is high in the sky and nearly every seat is sun-soaked. Even if most seats start the game in the sun, more and more will become shaded throughout the afternoon. Focus your shade search on the west sideline, specifically sections 16-20, which are directly adjacent to the Terry Donahue Pavilion. Rows closer to the back will become shaded first, while rows closer to the field will stay sunny for longer.
The sunniest seats are on the east side of the stadium. Barring a cloudy day, all rows of sections 1-8 are guaranteed to be in the path of the sun for the entirety of an afternoon game.

Seats in the Sun and Shade at Late Afternoon and Evening Rose Bowl Games
Thanks to the design of Rose Bowl Stadium, the same basic principles apply in the evening as in the afternoon: pick a seat on the west side of the stadium adjacent to the Terry Donahue Pavilion for shade; expect sun everywhere else. The biggest difference is that by late afternoon all rows of sections 16-20 are shaded. You can sit as close to the field as you like with the sun safely at your back. The north end zone will also become shaded as the evening wears on. Sections 11-15 will become shaded before those on the eastern side of the goal line.
