Q2 Stadium is an open-air soccer stadium in Austin, Texas. It’s a modern venue that serves as the home pitch for Austin FC. Central Texas is infamous for hot and sunny weather, particularly in the summer months. Fans planning to attend Austin FC matches at Q2 Stadium should use this guide along with the stadium’s seating chart to find the best shaded seats and beat the Texas heat.

Where are the seats in the shade and sun at Q2 Stadium?

Typically, shaded seats at Q2 Stadium are situated:

  • Along the west sideline
  • In the upper rows behind the goal lines

Conversely, sunny seats are predominantly found:

  • Lower-level along the east sideline

Matches at Q2 Stadium usually kick off in the late afternoon or evening, though some start early in the day. For most of the year, and in particular during summer, the Texas sun is intense, even during evening matches.

Q2 Stadium Orientation to the Sun

The stadium’s slightly off-axis north-to-south orientation means the sun is almost directly above the south goal line in the 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM hour. Over the course of the afternoon the sun dips behind the structure on the west side of the stadium. It eventually sets near the north goal line.

The graphic below shows the approximate location of the sun throughout the day on July 1st.

Seats in the Sun and Shade at Afternoon Q2 Stadium Matches

Q2 Stadium is similar to soccer-specific stadiums built during the same era and features seating on all four sides of the pitch with a hollow rectangular roof covering the stands. The roof provides a fair amount of shade, but due to the sun’s position throughout the day, some sections receive more shade than others.

For 1:00 PM games, the best option for shade is behind the south goal line in sections 101-105, where most seats are under the cover of the roof. Seats closest to the pitch might be sunny for a short time at the beginning of the match but will quickly become shaded as the game progresses. On the west sideline, sections 309-317 will be shaded, thanks to the roof. Sections 108-118 are mostly safe from the sun, though it’s best to choose a seat farther from the pitch for higher probability of shade. By mid-afternoon, all seats on the west sideline will be shaded as the sun shifts westward. On the east side, sections 228-236 should also receive shade from the roof, but rows closest to the pitch may move into the sun later in the afternoon.

The sunniest seats are on the east sideline, particularly in lower-level sections 128-136. Seats here are exposed as the sun’s position shifts, allowing rays to sneak through the hollow opening above the pitch.

Seats in the Sun and Shade at Evening Q2 Stadium Matches

By early evening, the entire west sideline of the stadium and the south goal line will be in the shade. On the east sideline, sections 128-136 will remain sunny until the sun is low enough to be blocked by the stadium on the opposite side. Additionally, if you have sensitive eyes, be cautious with sections 228-236, as you’ll face the sun for at least part of the game!
