Shaded Seats at NRG Stadium
NRG Stadium, located in downtown Houston, is the versatile home of the NFL’s Houston Texans. It also regularly hosts major events, including major concerts, RodeoHouston, and the 2026 World Cup. As the first NFL stadium with a retractable roof, NRG Stadium offers an adaptable environment that can be tailored to a variety of weather conditions. Realistically, most visitors will experience events with the roof closed, but on the chance the game you’re attending will be open-air, it’s helpful to know where to find the best shaded seats at NRG Stadium.
Where Are the Seats in the Shade and Sun at NRG Stadium?
When the roof is open, you’ll find shaded seats at NRG Stadium:
- South End Zone: Consistent shade throughout the day
- West Sideline: Shaded on the Texans’ home side
And sunlit seats at NRG Stadium are mainly:
- North End Zone: Sunny during early afternoon games
- East Sideline: Sun soaked later in the afternoon
Texans games typically kick off at 12:00 p.m., occasionally around 3:00 p.m., and sometimes after sunset for NFL Sunday Night or Monday Night games. Concerts and soccer games are frequently scheduled for late afternoon or early evening. For specific details about shaded sections at different start times, please continue reading.
Seating Chart Tip: The Texans home bench is on the west side of the NRG Stadium seating map, a handy landmark for orienting the seating sections for NFL games.
NRG Stadium Orientation to the Sun
NRG Stadium is oriented north to south. By noon, the sun is high in the sky near the south end zone. Over the course of the afternoon, it dips behind the west side of the stadium and eventually sets near the north end zone. This configuration generally makes the south and west sides of the stadium the “shade sides,” while the north and east sides receive the most sun.
The graphic below shows the approximate location of the sun throughout the day on September 1st.

Seats in the Sun and Shade at Early Afternoon NRG Stadium Events
NRG Stadium features a rectangular-shaped retractable roof directly above the field of play. It is a fairly large retractable roof, so when it is open, the field and a substantial number of seats are exposed to the elements. On the sidelines, the upper and middle-level sections are under the cover of the non-retractable portion of the roof, but the lower level is not. Since the sun shines at an angle, seats higher than the 100-level are not completely safe from the sun!
For early day shade, prefer a seat behind the south end zone or on the southern half of either sideline. Sideline sections 102-106, 127-131, 304-309, 338-343, 601-608, and 635-642 are all good choices for shade seekers for a game with a noon kickoff. The orientation of the stadium combined with the angle of the sun means you won’t have to worry about the sun at all.
The calculation changes for a 3:00 p.m. or later kickoff. By now, the sun has shifted in the sky and is behind the west side of the stadium. Shade seekers should prefer the west (home) sideline over the east (visitor) sideline. Sideline sections 102-111 and 204-315 are safe choices for shade. Upper-level sections on both sidelines are far enough back that they are protected by the non-retractable portion of the roof. If you’re OK with nosebleed seats, these are a decent choice for shade seekers. By mid-afternoon, many seats behind the north end zone will move into the shade, but the south end zone is still a safer bet.
The sunniest seats are on the east sideline, specifically in sections 122-131 and 332-343. Not every section will receive sun at the same time, and not every section will be in the sun for the entire game. But if sun avoidance is important, these sections may receive a blast of afternoon rays.

When the roof is open sun can hit seats behind the north end zone and east sideline (right). Seats on the west sideline are the best bet for shade.

Seats in the Sun and Shade at Evening NRG Stadium Events
Shade is plentiful by evening, even when the roof is open. Sections on the west (home) side and behind both end zones are reliably shaded. Those looking to avoid the sun should be careful with seats on the east (visitor) side. Before sunset, fans seated on this side may get a direct blast of sun, and because of the sun’s low angle by evening, even seats in the upper deck, especially those in the first few rows, are at risk of some rays. Pack sunglasses if you choose a seat on the east sideline, just in case, because you don’t want to miss any of the action on the field if the sun is in your eyes.
