Nissan Stadium is a prominent football venue located on the banks of the Cumberland River in Nashville. It serves as the home field for the Tennessee Titans and Tennessee State Tigers and despite its age is still an exciting spot to catch a professional or college football game. Nashville experiences a variety of weather conditions, and even the fall can be quite warm and humid. As an open-air stadium, it’s crucial for fans to be aware of seat locations that offer the most shade, particularly for games at the beginning of the Titans season.

Where Are the Seats in the Shade and Sun at Nissan Stadium?

Generally speaking, shaded seats at Nissan Stadium are located:

  • On the Titans’ home (west) side of the stadium

Conversely, seats in the sun at Nissan Stadium can be found:

  • On the away team’s (east) side of the stadium
  • Behind the end zones

Unless scheduled for a national Sunday Night or Monday Night Football game, most Titans games kick off around noon to accommodate the NFL’s television schedule. College games often start later in the afternoon, as they are not tied to the NFL’s strict television schedule. For specific details about sections and start times, continue reading.

Nissan Stadium Orientation to the Sun

Nissan Stadium is oriented in a northwest-to-southeast direction. By noon, the sun is high in the sky near the southern end zone. Over the course of the afternoon, it moves down behind the home field side of the stadium and eventually sets near the northern end zone.

The graphic below shows the approximate location of the sun throughout the day on October 1st.

Seats in the Sun and Shade at Early Afternoon Nissan Stadium Games

Since the Titans usually kick off an hour earlier than teams in the Eastern Time Zone, most seats at Nissan Stadium will be in the sun at kickoff and will remain that way for the entire game. This is a consequence of starting games when the sun is at its highest point in the sky in a stadium without canopies or other forms of cover. Initially, only fans seated in the very last rows on the 100-level, directly below the level above, will be safe from the sun’s rays.

As the afternoon progresses, seats on the home (west) side of the stadium will start to move into the shade as the stadium structure begins to obstruct the sun. For a shaded seat, consider sections 107-117 or 206-218. However, be aware that it might take a quarter or two before your section is shaded. Make sure to apply sunscreen if you’re sensitive to UV rays!

Seats on the east (visitor’s) side of the stadium will largely remain in the sun for most of an early afternoon game. Sections like 129-141, 225-245, and 326-344 will be mostly sun-soaked, unless it’s a cloudy day. Avoiding the sun will also be challenging if you sit behind the northern end zone, particularly in sections 120-127.

Seats in the Sun and Shade at Late Afternoon Games at Nissan Stadium

On the rare occasion that the Titans kick off after 3:00 p.m., it becomes a bit easier to find a seat in the shade. For later-day games, most seats on the west (home) side of the field will be shaded for most or all of the game.

On the east (visitor’s) side, shade will start to cover the seats closest to the field first and move upward. It will first reach the 100-level, followed by the 200-level, and finally the 300-level. Be cautious when choosing a bleeder seat on the east side of the stadium if you’re sensitive to the sun, and make sure to bring sunglasses. You might need them for at least the first quarter or two. The seats at the top, however, offer nice views of downtown Nashville.
