Where Are the Seats in the Shade and Sun at Marvel Stadium?

As a general rule, the seats in the shade at Marvel Stadium are:

• Behind the Northern End: Shaded except for the first few rows
• Western Wing: Shaded by mid-afternoon and in the evening
• Under Cover on Level 3: Seats directly under the roof are shaded

And the seats in the sun at Marvel Stadium are mainly:

• Eastern Wing: Sunny especially in Levels 1 and 2
• Behind the Southern End: Sun soaked except in the upper-level

Shade shifts with season, clouds, and kickoff time. If you’re sun-sensitive, target rows tucked under the roof lines or on the west side for afternoon matches.

Marvel Stadium Orientation to the Sun

Marvel Stadium is oriented northwest-to-southeast. In Melbourne summers, the sun tracks across the northern sky: it’s at its highest point around 2:00 PM, then it drops behind the west side and sets toward the southwest. That’s why the western wing shades first while the eastern wing stays sunny the longest.

Seats in the Sun and Shade at Afternoon Marvel Stadium Matches

Marvel Stadium is a true multi-purpose venue that can be set up in either a rectangular or oval orientation. Seating is split into three levels and is more or less evenly distributed on all sides. When the roof is open, its panels retract to expose the playing surface. Fixed roof overhangs still cover parts of the wings and the ends.

Matches and events at Marvel Stadium are usually scheduled for late afternoon or early evening. On the rare occasions when events start around lunchtime, your best chance for shade is to sit directly under cover. Look for a seat in the upper level in any aisle. The non-retractable portions of the roof provide cover on the wings, and the fixed roof provides cover behind the ends. If you choose an end section, the north side (Aisles 20-29) is a safer bet for shade, with the sun above and behind these seats.

By 4:00 PM the sun is in the west. On the west wing (Harbour Esplanade side), Aisles 7-18 are good options for shade. The middle and upper levels are safely shaded at this hour, though a few pitch-level seats may catch sun briefly until the shade line reaches them. On the east wing (Wurundjeri Way side), only seats in the upper level of Aisles 31-42 offer shade.

The sunniest seats are in the middle and lower levels on the east wing. Aisles 31-42 are directly in the sun’s path, though in mid-afternoon the angle still allows seats tucked under the roof in the upper level to stay shaded.

Seats in the Sun and Shade at Evening Marvel Stadium Matches

By early evening, the entire west wing (Harbour Esplanade side) is in shade. As the sun dips, the stand casts a shadow that creeps across the playing surface. Seats in the middle and lower levels behind the north and south ends become shaded once the shadow reaches them. Seats in the upper level behind both ends are already shaded by the roof.

On the east wing (Wurundjeri Way side), Aisles 31-42 remain sunny until the shade line arrives. Once it crosses the playing surface, shade covers seats in the lower level first, then the middle level. During the longest days of the Aussie summer, even the highest rows in the upper level can cop a blast of sunshine immediately before sunset. Bring high-quality sunnies if you’re sitting up here.
