Jordan–Hare Stadium Orientation to the Sun

Jordan–Hare Stadium is situated in a northeast-to-southwest orientation. By noon, the sun is high in the sky over the southeast corner near the end zone. Over the course of the afternoon, it curves and dips behind the west side of the stadium, where it eventually sets. This configuration generally makes the south and west sides of the stadium the “shade sides” for afternoon games, but not for morning games.

The graphic below shows the approximate hour-by-hour position of the sun throughout the day on September 1st.

Seats in the Sun and Shade at Early Afternoon Jordan–Hare Stadium Games

Jordan–Hare Stadium uses a bowl-style design, with seating on all sides of the field, plus additional suites, club seating, and an upper deck on both sidelines. The seating chart uses a strictly numeric system for section numbering.

When the Tigers kick off early in the afternoon, or even in the morning, the sun is high, and shade is sparse. The best hope for shade in the morning and early afternoon is behind the south end zone, in rows as far from the field as possible. Shade seekers should focus on Sections 15-20. The giant video board behind them creates a physical wall that blocks some sun from behind and casts a shadow over the back rows in these sections. Later in the football season, when the sun is lower in the sky, the shadow may extend all the way to the field, but the safest bet for shade is a row farther back.

Fans arriving early for an 11:00 AM game may notice a bit of shade on the east side of the stadium before kickoff. Shade on the sidelines won’t last long, as the sun will continue to rise until it reaches its peak around halftime. By the end of a morning game, both sidelines will be sun-soaked, as will seats behind the north end zone.

Seats in the Sun and Shade at Late Afternoon and Evening Jordan–Hare Stadium Games

When the Tigers are scheduled for a 2:30 PM or later game, shade is more abundant, as long as you know where to look. Around this hour, the sun will be curving and dipping behind the west side of the stadium. Shade seekers should look for seats in Sections 1-11 and 47-62. For a 2:30 PM game, many seats may start the game in the sun, but shade will increase over the course of the game. By halftime, the majority of seats on the west sideline should be shaded.

For 6:00 PM games, shade seekers should continue to focus on the west sideline. Sections 1-11 and 47-62 are shaded by late in the afternoon. End zone Sections 12-20 and 38-46 should also start an evening game in the shade. If not, seats behind the end zones will become shaded quickly after kickoff.

The sunniest seats are on the east sideline. Seats in Sections 24-34 and 99-114 are sun-soaked at the beginning of an evening game. As the shade line crosses the field, Sections 24-34 will become shaded first, while Sections 99-119 in the upper deck will stay sunny until sunset.
