Jones AT&T Stadium Orientation to the Sun

Jones AT&T Stadium is oriented north to south. By noon, the sun is high in the sky over the southeast corner near the end zone. Over the course of the afternoon, it curves and dips behind the west side of the stadium, where it eventually sets. This configuration generally makes the west side of the stadium the “shade side,” while the east side is the sunniest.

Seats in the Sun and Shade at Early Afternoon Jones AT&T Stadium Games

Jones AT&T Stadium is a historic venue that has undergone significant modernizations over the years. It mixes modern amenities with classic stadium vibes. Club seating is primarily located behind the end zones. Chairback seating is available near the 50-yard line, and bleacher-style benches are located in the corners. Suites rise above both the east and west sidelines.

When the Red Raiders kick off in the morning, the sun is high and shade is extremely limited. Over the course of an 11:00 AM game, the sun floats across the sky over the south end zone. The best hope for shade at this hour is in the club seats behind the south end zone. Sections 24-32 are not covered, but the suites behind them form a tower that blocks out the sun.

While most uncovered seats are sunny early in the day, the absolute sunniest spots are field level on both sidelines. Barring a cloudy day, Sections 1-11 and 13-23 will get blasted with Texas sun, so bring your sun protection if you’re sitting in these sections!

Fans arriving early for an 11:00 AM game may notice a bit of shade on the east side of the stadium before kickoff. Sections 116-122 are partially shaded in the morning, as the east sideline suites block the rising sun. However, this shade won’t last long, as the sun will continue to rise until it reaches its peak around halftime.

Seats in the Sun and Shade at Late Afternoon and Evening Jones AT&T Stadium Games

When the Red Raiders are scheduled for a game at 2:30 PM or later, shade is more plentiful and a bit easier to find. Shade seekers should focus on the west (home) sideline. Sections 102-108 are the first to become shaded. As the sun curves around to the west side of the stadium, the west suites rise above the stands and act as a physical barrier between the sun and the seats adjacent to them. As the sun continues to dip over the course of the game, Sections 1-10 will become shaded as well, even though they will likely be sunny at the start.

The sunniest seats are on the east (away) side of the stadium. Sections 12-23 and 113-122 are sun-soaked at the start of a mid-afternoon game. As the game progresses, the shade line will cross the field and begin covering seats on the east side from lowest to highest. Field-level seats will get shaded first, and upper seats will stay sunny the longest. Seats behind the north end zone will start a mid-afternoon game in the sun but an early evening game in the shade.
