The Texas Rangers moved to their new home, Globe Life Field, in 2020. The Dallas Metroplex experiences brutally hot and humid summers and the previous Rangers stadium was notoriously one of the hottest ballparks in the majors. Taking a page from the other Texas ballpark, Globe Life Field was designed with a retractable roof, but here are plenty of early-season games when baseball in Arlington is played with the roof open. Rangers fans can use this guide to identify the shaded seats at Globe Life Field.

Where are the shaded seats at Globe Life Field?

When the roof is open, the seats in the shade at Globe Life Field are located:

  • Behind Home Plate: Shaded by mid-afternoon and during evening games
  • 3rd Base Line: Shaded in late afternoon and evening
  • Under Cover: Rows under an overhang at field and mezzanine level are shaded

For the 2024 season, the Rangers primarily play day games (1:35 p.m.), late afternoon games (3:05 p.m.), and evening games (6:05 p.m. or 7:05 p.m.). Summer in North Texas is infamously hot and humid. For this reason, the roof at Globe Life Field is typically open during the spring and fall months and closed during the summer. Regardless of when you’re attending, it doesn’t hurt to be prepared!

Globe Life Field Orientation to the Sun

Globe Life Field is oriented to the northeast. Each morning sun rises behind right field, curves around home plate at lunchtime and sets near the left field corner. When the roof is open, this configuration makes the 3rd base side of the park the “shade side,” while the 1st base side and right field are the sunniest spots.

The graphic below shows the approximate location of the sun throughout the day on July 1st (halfway through the MLB season).

Where to Buy Tickets

MLB operates the official Box Office for the Rangers. SeatGeek is the official resale partner for all MLB teams, offering access to a broader variety of seats, including those owned by season ticket holders. The Box Office provides access to unsold seats at face value plus fees, while SeatGeek may offer occasional last-minute deals and discounts on lower-demand games.

Seats in the Shade at Rangers Early Afternoon Games

When the Rangers play a day game, the sun begins high above first base. For the first few innings, shade is limited. The only initially shaded seats are under cover. At field level, the last few rows in sections 5-22 benefit from an overhang. Similarly, in left field, the last few rows of sections 27-33 are under an overhang. In the upper deck, sections 301-314 are situated under the permanent section of the roof. On the opposite side, sections 233-236 should start the game in the shade, though many rows may shift into the sun as the game progresses.

As the afternoon advances, the sun will begin to dip behind the stadium on the 3rd base side. Seats near home plate and farther back from the field will start to receive some shade as the sun moves across the sky. By the late innings, nearly all seats on the 3rd base line in the upper and mezzanine levels will be shaded.

Seats in the Shade at Rangers Late Afternoon Games

For games scheduled to start at 3:05, shade seekers should favor the 3rd base side of the ballpark. Field-level seats close to the action may start the game in the sun but will transition into the shade after a few innings. Fans in upper-level sections 301-314 and mezzanine level sections 103-114 will have the sun at their back and be shaded for most, if not all, of the game.

The sunniest seats are along the 1st base line, near the right field foul pole, and behind the right field wall. Sections 17-26, 118-133, and 222-232 should be avoided if you’re sensitive to sunlight.

Seats in the Shade at Rangers Evening Games

Finding shade for an evening game is relatively straightforward. For a 6:05 or 7:05 game, most rows in 3rd base sections will be shaded from first pitch. Shade seekers can confidently choose seats between home plate and the left field foul pole on any level. For 7:05 games, sections behind the left field wall should also be shaded. The sunniest sections are deep down the 1st base line near the right field foul pole, where fans may have the sun in their eyes until sunset.

Seats in the Shade When the Globe Life Field Roof is Closed

When the roof is closed, shade isn’t a major concern. However, for 7:05 games, sunlight can sneak through the large windows above the 3rd base side upper deck. When this happens, sections in right field are susceptible to sun and glare, although this should only last a short time until the sun dips low enough to be blocked by the stands. Nonetheless, fans who prefer to avoid glare entirely should steer clear of right field for evening games.
