Devon Park (also called USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium) is one of the only softball-specific ballparks in the United States. It hosts the annual Women’s College World Series in May and June and will serve as the official softball venue at the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Olympics. Additionally, it’s the home field for the Oklahoma City Spark. Oklahoma City experiences consistently hot and humid summer months, so softball fans can use this guide along with the stadium’s seating chart to find the best shaded seats at Devon Park.

Where are the shaded seats at Devon Park?

Generally, the seats in the shade at Devon Park are located:

Behind Home Plate: The first seats to become shaded
3rd Base Line: Increasingly becomes shaded during the afternoon

To accommodate all the games in the Women’s College World Series, the NCAA frequently schedules doubleheaders or tripleheaders during the tournament. These can start as early as 11:00 a.m. and as late as 9:30 p.m. It is also likely that multiple games per day will be scheduled during the Olympics. Coordinating your seat choice with the start time is critical if you’re looking for shade.

Devon Park Orientation to the Sun

Devon Park is oriented to the northeast. Each morning, the sun rises over center field, curves around home plate after lunchtime, and sets in the evening behind the left field corner. This orientation makes the 3rd base line the “shade side” of the ballpark, while the 1st base line and outfield bleachers are the sunny spots.

Seats in the Shade at Early Afternoon Softball Games

Shade is sparse for early day games in Oklahoma City. Between noon and 2:00 p.m., the sun is positioned over the 1st base side of the park. However, it is so high in the sky that very few sections have any barrier to block the sun’s rays. Devon Park became a two-level stadium after a major renovation, but the overhang from the new upper level provides almost no shade, with only the last row or two being exceptions. Early in the afternoon, no matter which seat you choose, you’ll be battling the sun for at least the first few innings.

Between 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., the sun will begin to rotate around home plate, and as it dips, some shade will start to appear behind home plate. Section 10 will be the first to receive consistent shade. Choose a seat in the back half of the section if possible, as the press box and stadium structure behind will provide a physical barrier to the sun’s rays.

Seats in the Shade at Late Afternoon Softball Games

Softball fans have an easier time finding a shaded seat for a game scheduled for 3:00 p.m. or later. The safest bet for shade is still behind home plate in section 10. If a prime seat is not in the cards, focus on the 3rd base side of the stadium. Fans on this side of the ballpark will have the sun at their backs. Over the course of the game, everyone in sections 1-11, 101-108, and 201-210 will eventually become shaded.

The sunniest sections are along the 1st base line. Sections 12-18, 109-116, and 211-218 are in the path of the sun, and in the late afternoon, fans seated here will also have the sun in their eyes. Outfield bleacher sections 19-22 are also completely exposed to the sun during afternoon games.

By late-afternoon the 3rd base side of the stadium is entirely shaded. Seats on the 1st base side and bleacher seats in the outfield are in the direct path of the setting sun.

Seats in the Shade at Evening Softball Games

Sunset in Oklahoma City isn’t until well after 8:30 p.m. during the summer months, so unless the game is scheduled to start later than that, fans should be mindful of the sun. The good news is that by the evening hours, seats behind home plate and along the 3rd base line are all shaded. Choose any seat in sections 1-11, 101-108, and 201-210 to escape the sun’s rays.

Seats along the 1st base line remain sunny even after the 3rd base line has become shaded. This includes sections 12-18, 109-116, and 211-218. Outfield bleacher seats are also not ideal if you’re trying to escape the sun, as there’s nothing to block the sun’s rays until sunset.
