Shaded Seats at Churchill Downs

Churchill Downs, the iconic horse racing venue in Louisville, is best known as the home of the Kentucky Derby. It also hosts elite Thoroughbred racing, including the Kentucky Oaks, across more than 70 live racing days each year. Louisville has a hot and humid climate and many seats are exposed to the elements. This guide will help racing fans find the best shaded seats for a comfortable day at the track.

Covered vs. Shaded Seats at Churchill Downs

Most online seating guides focus exclusively on covered seats. At some stadiums, a covered seat isn’t necessarily a shaded seat, but the orientation of Churchill Downs more-or-less ensures that if there’s a roof over your head, you’re protected from the sun. That said, Churchill Downs is an old historic venue so some covered seats have obstructed views if you’re behind a structural pillar. For that reason some fans may prefer uncovered areas where you can still find shade later in the day.

Churchill Downs Orientation to the Sun

Churchill Downs has a northeast-to-southwest orientation. On race mornings, the sun rises over the final turn and crosses above the track around midday. By 4:00 PM, it moves behind the first turn, and by early evening, it sets behind the grandstand and clubhouse boxes.

Because of this orientation, the availability of shade depends on the time of day:

• Early Afternoon: Only covered seats are shaded
• Mid Afternoon: Uncovered seats farther from the track begin to get shade
• Early Evening: Most seats, except those in the infield, are shaded

How to Identify Covered Seats

A seat at Churchill Downs is either covered or not. Seating charts can easily specify whether a seat is covered. On Ticketmaster, when you click or tap on a seat under Description it will either indicate “Covered Seat” or “Uncovered Seat”. This is how it appears on the desktop version of Ticketmaster:

Another helpful tool is the Churchill Downs Virtual Venue, which allows you to explore a virtual view from any section. It works like Google Street View, letting you look up to check for a roof or turn around to gauge your distance from the grandstand structure.

By mid-afternoon, shadows from the grandstand start covering seats farthest from the track, gradually extending across all rows and eventually shading the track itself. Sections not immediately adjacent to the grandstand stay sunny, however. Additional information about specific seating sections is discussed below.

Homestretch & Starting Gate

This stretch of stands offers some of the most thrilling views, as it’s where the horses break from the gate and make their final push toward the finish line.

Shaded Seats by Level

• Sections 321-325 (3rd Floor Boxes): Covered, except for the first four rows. Covered seats remain shaded all afternoon, while the uncovered rows are the first to receive shade later in the day.
• Starting Gate Courtyard 1-7: Only the last four rows are covered. Seats closer to the track are fully exposed to the sun.
• Homestretch Club 1-11: Completely uncovered. These are the last seats to receive shade as the sun lowers behind the grandstand and clubhouse boxes.

Additionally, Sections 326-328 and Starting Gate Courtyard 8-15 are entirely uncovered. These seats, located just beyond the grandstand structure, offer prime views of the most exciting parts of the race, but are one of the worst options for shade-seekers, as they remain in direct sunlight for the longest period.

By late afternoon the sun is positioned behind the grandstand structure and seats adjacent to it are shaded, while those closest to the starting gate are sunny.

Updated Section Numbers

Churchill Downs is in the process of making major renovations to improve the fan experience. Starting in 2025 fold-down stadium style seats replace the old metal bleachers and the entire area is renamed the Starting Gate Courtyard. Depending which version of the seating chart you use, it may not look like the number system described above. For example, instead of Starting Gate Courtyard 8-15 it might show the old sections numbered 126-128.

To navigate these changes:

• Use 3rd-floor section numbers as a reference point, as they align most closely with the old section numbering.
• Check Ticketmaster’s Covered vs. Uncovered seat descriptions for accurate cover details.
• When in doubt, remember that for uncovered seats, those farther from the track receive shade earlier, except for sections 326-328 and those adjacent, which remain sunny all afternoon and evening.

Clubhouse Seating

Clubhouse seating at Churchill Downs offers a premium race-day experience with reserved seats, access to the Paddock and all-inclusive food and beverages. Lower clubhouse floors sit closer to the track for an up-close view, while upper floors provide a more expansive perspective of the entire racecourse, making them a top choice for many race fans.

Clubhouse Shaded Seats by Level

• Sections 312-320 (3rd Floor): Covered, except for the first three rows. Covered seats remain shaded all afternoon, while the uncovered rows receive shade later in the day.
• Section 212 (2nd Floor): Fully covered, providing consistent shade.
• Sections 113-117 (1st Floor): The last twelve rows are covered, while seats closer to the track are exposed to the sun.

Additionally, sections 111 and 112 are entirely uncovered. However, a big difference between the two is that 112 has the grandstand structure behind it, whereas 111 does not. This means that later in the afternoon seats in 111 will still be exposed to the sun while seats in 112 are comfortably in the shade.

First Turn Seating

In 2023, a major renovation at Churchill Downs introduced upgraded seating in a three-story, white-bricked building located at the first turn. These seats feature padded, stadium-style seats similar to those found in the premium sections of football or baseball stadiums. On the seating chart these are designated as sections 1001-1013 (lower-level) and sections 2001-2012 (upper-level).

While the view may not be as sought-after as seats along the main stretch, this area is ideal for shade-seekers. A large roof covers every row, and due to the track’s sun orientation, these seats are among the first to be shaded in the early afternoon.

The Infield

Watching the Kentucky Derby or other races from the infield is by far the most affordable way to experience an event at Churchill Downs. In the past infield tickets were all general admission but in 2025 reserved seating in the bleachers is an option as well. Reserved seating offers better views but neither option is ideal for those looking to avoid the sun. The infield is completely exposed to the elements, and the bleachers face directly into the sun by late afternoon, right around the time the main race is typically scheduled.
