BMO Field is an open-air stadium located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It serves as the home field for Toronto FC of MLS and the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL. Canada isn’t known for having a hot climate, but Toronto’s summers bring warm and sunny days. Its northern location also means late sunsets in the summer months. Fans attending events here should use this guide and the stadium’s seating chart to locate the best shaded seats at BMO Field.

Where are the seats in the shade and sun at BMO Field?

Typically, shaded seats at BMO Field are situated:

  • Along the west sideline
  • In the 200-levels under the canopy roof

Conversely, seats in the sun are predominantly found:

  • Along the east sideline
  • In the supporters section behind the south goal line

Games at BMO Field usually kick off in the evening, but mid-day and early afternoon matches are mixed into the schedule too. Since Toronto is a city with four seasons, depending on the time of year you’re heading to the stadium, a seat in the sun or the shade may be preferable.

BMO Field Orientation to the Sun

The stadium’s northwest-to-southwest orientation means the sun is almost directly above the south goal line in the 1:00 PM hour. Over the course of the afternoon the sun descends behind the west side of the stadium. It eventually sets near the north goal line.

The graphic below shows the approximate location of the sun throughout the day on July 1st.

Seats in the Sun and Shade at Afternoon BMO Field Matches

BMO Field stands out by North American standards as it’s smaller than NFL stadiums but larger than the average soccer-specific stadium used in MLS. The stadium’s design primarily features seats along the sidelines, under large roofs that extend almost to the edge of the playing field. This design means that even seats on the “sunny side” of the stadium are shaded for most, if not all, of the afternoon.

For 1:00 PM games, shade is available in the upper levels on both sidelines. Sections 203-211 and 219-227, being positioned far from the pitch, are shaded early in the day when the sun is high. For guaranteed shade throughout the afternoon, the west sideline sections 219-227 are recommended. Closer to the pitch, sections 119-127 are a good choice, though some rows may start the afternoon in the sun but will move into the shade as the sun shifts.

The sunniest seats are in the lower-level east sideline, sections 104-111. The supporters’ section 112-118 behind the south goal line is also sun-exposed, as there is no roof or structure to block the sun early in the day.

Seats in the Sun and Shade at Evening BMO Field Matches

By early evening, the entire west sideline of the stadium and the south goal line will be shaded. On the east sideline, sections 104-111 will remain sun-soaked until the sun is low enough to be blocked by the stadium on the opposite side. Fans in the upper-level sections 203-211 will experience sunlight the longest, with relief coming only after sunset.
