Shaded Seats at Allianz Stadium
Allianz Stadium is one of Sydney’s premier rectangular venues. Home to the Sydney Roosters, Sydney FC, and the NSW Waratahs, it’s celebrated for steep stands that puts fans close to the on-field action. Sydney’s summers get hot and sunny and knowing the position of the sun is especially important for afternoon kickoffs. Fans can use this guide along with the stadium seating map to find the shaded seats at Allianz Stadium.
Where Are the Seats in the Shade and Sun at Allianz Stadium?
As a general rule, the seats in the shade at Allianz Stadium are:
- North End: Shaded from afternoon through evening
- West Sideline: Shaded by mid-afternoon and in the evening
- Under Cover: Shaded in upper-level under the roof
And the seats in the sun at Allianz Stadium are mainly:
- East Sideline: Sunny especially in the lower-level
- South End: Sun soaked early in the day
Shade shifts with season, cloud cover, and kickoff time. If you’re sun-sensitive, prioritize rows tucked under the roof/overhang or on the west side for afternoon matches.
Allianz Stadium Orientation to the Sun
Allianz Stadium has a slightly off-axis north-to-south orientation. In Sydney, the sun arcs across the northern sky: it reaches its high point in the sky around 12:00-1:00 PM, then sinks behind the west side and sets toward the southwest. That’s why the west sideline shades earliest, while the east sideline tends to stay sunny until late in the day.
The graphic below shows the approximate hour-by-hour position of the sun throughout the day on January 1st.

Seats in the Sun and Shade at Afternoon Allianz Stadium Matches
Allianz Stadium has a rectangular design with a roof that extends toward the pitch on all four sides and covers almost all seats. That’s great in light rain, but as the sun shifts through the day, some sections get more shade than others.
It’s rare for matches at Allianz Stadium to kick off around lunchtime, but when they do, seats at the north end are best positioned for early-arvo shade. Sections 19-28 and 220-227 sit under the roof and are well protected.
By 3:00 PM the sun sits in the west. Along the western sideline, seats in sections 10-18, 209-219 and 409-419 are comfortably shaded. The only seats likely to catch sun at this hour are at pitch level. Even if they start in the sun, fans will be watching with the sun at their back, and the shade line usually moves over them as the match goes on. On the east side, sections 428-438 are generally shaded by the roof, but as the afternoon progresses the sun reaches more rows, starting closest to the pitch and moving upward.
The sunniest seats are on the lower east sideline, especially sections 29-37, where rays come through the stadium opening. Sections 228-238 are also highly sun-exposed. Behind the south end, sections 01-09 and 201-208 get sun for parts of the afternoon. If you’re seeking out shade behind the goals, pick the north end over the south end.

By the middle of the afternoon, the east side of the stadium (across the pitch) is sunny, while the west side (where the photo it taken) is shaded.

Seats in the Sun and Shade at Evening Allianz Stadium Matches
By early evening, the entire western sideline and the areas behind both the north and south ends are in shade. On the east sideline, sections 29-37 and 228-238 stay sunny until the sun drops low enough to be blocked by the opposite stand. Upper-level sections 428-438 sit in the direct path of the sun just before sunset so bring your best sunnies unless it’s a cloudy day.
