Allianz Field is a modern open-air soccer stadium in Saint Paul, Minnesota. It serves as the home ground for Minnesota United FC of MLS. Minnesota summers bring a mix of hot, sunny days and late sunsets, making seating choice important for fans. Those attending matches at Allianz Field can use this guide along with the stadium’s seating chart to identify the best shaded seats at Allianz Field.

Where are the seats in the shade and sun at Allianz Field?

Typically, shaded seats at Allianz Field are located:

  • Along the west sideline
  • In the Wonderwall supporters section

On the other hand, sunny seats are predominantly found:

  • Along the east sideline
  • Behind the north goal line

Matches at Allianz Field usually kick off in the evening, though some start early in the day. Minnesota has hot and sunny summers, with average daily highs in July and August up in the 80s. Soccer fans should be aware of the location of shaded seats to help stay cool during the game.

Allianz Field Orientation to the Sun

The stadium’s north-to-south orientation means the sun is almost directly above the south goal line in the 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM hour. Over the course of the afternoon the sun gradually dips behind the west side of the stadium and eventually sets near the north goal line.

The graphic below shows the approximate location of the sun throughout the day on July 1st.

Seats in the Sun and Shade at Afternoon Allianz Field Matches

Allianz Field boasts an oval-shaped design with a ring-shaped roof that encircles the pitch, covering most sections and providing protection from both sun and rain. Although the roof offers considerable shade, the sun’s changing position throughout the day means that some sections receive more shade than others.

For 1:00 PM games, the Wonderwall supporters section behind the south goal line is well-positioned for shade. However, as these are standing-room-only areas with a distinct atmosphere, they may not be suitable for all fans.

On the west sideline, sections 27-36 and premium club seats and suites are mostly shaded. The ring-shaped roof extends quite far over the stands, so most seats on this sideline, except for those closest to the pitch, start the match in the shade. These front-row seats will become shaded by mid-afternoon as the sun shifts westward. On the east side, the highest rows in sections 108-118 are generally shaded by the roof, but as the afternoon progresses, the sun will start to reach more rows, beginning with those closest to the pitch and moving upward.

The sunniest seats are on the lower east sideline, particularly in sections 9-17, where the sun’s position allows rays to penetrate through the stadium’s opening. Sections 2-6 behind the north goal line will also be quite sunny during a day game until late afternoon, when the sun shifts enough to offer some relief.

Seats in the Sun and Shade at Evening Allianz Field Matches

By early evening, the entire west sideline of the stadium and the areas behind the goal lines will be shaded. On the east sideline, sections 9-17 will remain sunny until the sun is low enough to be blocked by the stadium on the opposite side. Fans in sections 108-118, particularly those with sensitive eyes, should be aware that they will face the sun for part of the game.
